Country: Scotland

Haunted Place : Dryburgh Abbey Hotel

Details of Haunted Place :

The Grey Lady At Dryburgh Abbey

Sitting along the River Tweed in the Scottish Borders is the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel. Built in 1845, and turned into a hotel in 1932, the hotel has become known as the home of the Grey Lady.

According to legend, the spirit that haunts the hotel is not someone who even existed when the house was built in 1845. Years ago, there was an abbey next to the site of the hotel, and it was here that a young woman and monk fell in love. When the love was learned about by the abbot of the abbey, the monk was killed. In despair, the young woman threw herself into a river and drowned.

These days, the Grey Lady as she has come to be known, walks across the chain bridge and through the outbuildings of the hotel in a silent walk that many visitors have seen. In fact, during a remodeling phase for the hotel in 1991 and 1992, several builders reported seeing a woman in grey, walking by herself around the hotel.

The Grey Lady has helped to make the hotel one of the most famous haunted places in all of Scotland, and the British Isles.
